Shopping for a dog door

By Craig Lewis

There are many important reasons and advantages for a dog owner to consider purchasing and installing a dog (or cat) door. A dog door can provide your pet with an easy way out in case of preference or an emergency such as a house fire and an easy way in for the same basic reasons, preference or safety from predators.

Just as dogs come in various sizes so do pet doors. So it would probably be wise to take your pets measurements with you when picking out a door, for safety reasons as well as for the convenience it will provide.

When buying a dog door, the options are endless, as with anything else. A quick internet search will offer up thousands of hits. So it is best to have a sense of your priorities going into the process.

Things to consider before you purchase a pet door would be how much you want to spend, and where you would want to install it. Are you going to hire someone to install it for you or will you be doing the work yourself? Dog doors are easy to install and can be inserted in most styles of windows or doors. Such as screens, french doors, sliding glass doors, insulated metal doors, garage doors, kennels, etc.

Depending on your choice of style, prices can range from $115 to approximately $700. With some skill, this can be a do-it-yourself project, or you can hire the work completed for you.

If your dog is small, medium, or large, you can find a door that will be for that reason accommodating to your pet. Just make sure you have the proper measurements in width and the height of your dog.

Simple "flaps" are the entry level option in the world of dog doors and the variations continue, up to an "automatic door" that slides open when the sensor on the dog's tag is read by the sensor on the door.

When shopping for your pet door, be sure to choose a company that prides itself with quality products. You want a company that stands behind the product with customer service, offers a good warranty, has accessible replacement parts, and will spend some time showing you how to use the product with your pet. Your pet's safety should always be emphasized and the door should be built in such a way that it will be easily accepted by the dog. - 29895
