Boston Terrier Health Is Important, But So Are Other Concerns

By Abhik Sarkar

On the downside, if you are not keen on a drooling, neurotic, snoring, snorting, wheezing farting dog, a Boston might not be ideal. But all breeds of dog have their good and down sides, and so do Boston Terriers. They have been credited with being slow to house break, as well as having a tendency to certain health problems. However Boston Terrier health problems are not all that different from the health problems many other dogs experience.

Terriers are fantastic dogs if you are looking for a sturdy animal which is small but not a lap dog, and the Boston Terrier is ideal. They are not delicate, good natured, short faced dogs, with round expressive eyes, an easy to take care of, short coat and they are passionate about playing games with balls, people and even other pets.

A Boston Terrier as a pet for yourself or your family may or may not be the ideal choice of dog, but if you like the breed, the choice is yours. Be aware that you should never buy one of these puppies from a pet shop, these are often supplied by puppy farms. Puppy farming should not be supported in any way shape or form and you are able to do your bit, by buying your puppy from a reliable breeder whose premises you have inspected and are happy with the breeding conditions.

Boston terriers may also be put up for sale by people who have no idea how to breed them. In other word they have no knowledge of how to breed a dog with a good temper. Behavioral advisers and dog obedience instructors see many Boston Terriers who are neurotic and yap mindlessly, are aggressive or hyperactive. So good breeding is essential!

Most terrier breeds are quite highly strung, but they are also very intelligent and learn quickly. It fact that they are highly strung is what attracts many people to the terrier breeds, it is part of their charm. Boston Terriers require a good deal of training as they don't like being told what to do, but with love and perseverance, this is simple to achieve. They may be difficult to house train, and experts agree they take 4 - 6 months, but I don't think this is excessive for any dog.

They make noises which some people (like me) think is endearing, while others may not like it at all. They snuffle, wheeze, grunt, snort and snore, this is because of the short snout. They have quite loose jowls because of the short snout and may drool when they have eaten or drunk.

As any dog owner knows, dogs, just like people are prone to flatulence, some more than others, just like people. The Boston Terrier can send you screaming for cover, but if they are fed on a diet of proper meat and other good fresh food, this helps with the problem. It is all about the correct diet.

Again, because of the short nose, other health problems may arise. Bostons are also often over-bred and if you are not aware of their background, they may have health issues. All you really need to do is be aware of what can arise.

These terriers have a very unique personality, but then all dogs do. They come in the calm variety, but also in the energetic. They can be stubborn or sweet, serious or a real goofball. The most important thing for you to do is love them, they will love you in return, this is a guarantee. - 29895
