Common Canine Eye Problems

Canine eye problems are a common veterinary problem. Dog cataracts, conjunctivitis, and dry eye are just a few comments dog eye problems. Some dog breeds are susceptible to certain eye problems.

When the lens of the eye becomes opaque, it can be a sign of dog cataracts. The cataracts can block the dog's vision. Though cataracts are typically associated with older dogs, dogs of all ages can get cataracts.

Glaucoma is and eye condition that can lead to blindness. Glaucoma can cause poor vision, eye cloudiness, redness, and a dilated pupil that is not responsive to light.

Canine conjunctivitis can cause red, itchy, tearing eyes. The cause of conjunctivitis in dogs is usually allergies.

Dry eye is a condition in which the eyes do not produce enough tears. Some dog breeds are more susceptible to dry eye such as Pugs and Shih Tzu dogs. Dry eye in these dog breeds can be a serious problem.

Cherry eye is a canine eye problem that most commonly affects cocker spaniels, poodles, and bulldogs. Cherry eye is characterized by a prolapsed gland of the third eyelid. Dog breeds prone to entropion include Rottweilers, Labrador retrievers, Shar Pei, and cocker spaniels.

And inward folding of the eyelid which makes the eyelashes rub against the eye can be caused by a condition called entropion. Cocker spaniels, Shar Pei, Rottweilers, and Labrador retrievers are most often affected by entropion.

Ectopic cilia is a condition that causes an eyelash to grow abnormally and cause an ulcer on the cornea of the eye. Another condition that affects eyelashes is distichiasis which causes the eyelashes to grow along the eyelid too close to the eye. Eye lashes with abnormal growth or placement on the eyelids cause irritation to the eye.

Puppy strangles, also called puppy pyoderma, is a condition that can cause abscesses on the eyelid.Dermoid is another condition that can cause ulcers. Dermoid is a canine eye problem with the genetic cause characterized by hairy skin on the eye.

Sterile saline can be used to flush out a dogs eye if the dog gets dirt or debris in its eye. Changes at the eye including soreness, swelling, inflammation, or sores should be reported to the veterinarian as soon as possible. - 29895
