Small Dog Syndrome - Does Your Small Dog Control You?

By Sally Alexander

Small dogs are little canines usually with big personalities. However, they can also become big problems if you don't train them the way you should. If you let them, they can develop what is called small dog syndrome.

Spotting a dog that has small dog syndrome isn't difficult. All you have to do is look for the overly aggressive, extremely yappy, and overly protective pooch.

The size of a small dog makes it better able to get away with bad behavior much more easily than a large dog. After one bark from a huge dog, the owner will probably want them to stop, but with a small dog they can easily keep yapping and yapping and be ignored.

Many owners don't see their dogs as pets, but as babies. Small dogs have a great reputation of being adorable and loving little creatures. Owners that treat their dogs like babies will often pick them up when they do something wrong and coddle them.

Their cuteness and cuddliness makes it understandable why many owners let them act out of control. It's easy to let them continue to bark like crazy when someone enters your house.

When you have your dog on your lap you may find that it is extremely protective of you and will not let anyone else come close to you. This is them owning you. Since you are supposed to be the owner, it is not acceptable behavior.

Why do they act this way? Is it because of their size? A dog acts like this because it is allowed to act like that. If it was trained not to and not allowed to continue the bad behavior it would no longer be acting like a tiny terror.

Small dog syndrome is not permanent unless you continue to let them get away with it. With consistent training and discipline your dog will learn it can't act that way, and become a happier and better behaved companion. - 29895
