Stop Your Dog From Jumping Up To People With The Following Techniques

By Remco van Reenen

Did you know that a dog jumping up on people can be hazardous? It is also irritating and humiliating. Use the following tips to stop your dog from jumping up to people.

You are probably annoyed when your dog starts jumping up on you. Guess what, so is anyone who comes to visit. This behavior may have been cute when your dog was a puppy; but, as he has gotten older, it is nothing short of a nuisance.

Imagine your company or you walking through the door with your clean clothes on and here comes your wonderful dog to jump all over you or your company.

When senior citizens and small children come in close proximity of your dog, they run the risk of being knocked over if your dog jumps up on them.

Your dog jumps up on people because he's happy to see them.

Your dog may jump on you to get your attention. Maybe you rewarded the dog somehow in the past. It may also be done to declare supremacy over you and your guests.

Teaching your dog that jumping on people is not good is a choice you have to make.

Yourself and anyone else who comes into contact with your dog has to be consistent with sending the same message: he will not get what he wants by behaving badly. Hitting or punishing a dog is not going to work.

At the first sign of jumping, turn away from your dog. Don't say anything or make eye contact with the dog. This lets the dog know that they will get nothing from you.

Praise you dog and pet him when the bad behavior is over. Practicing this step constantly will help your dog learn that more attention is given when he keeps all four paws on the floor.

You can also practice alternate behavior training. When your dog starts jumping, tell him to sit. This gives him other things to do.

Reinforcing positive behavior when teaching your dog not to jump is quiet simple. Be consistent in your efforts and the problem will disappear. Follow the methods that I have described and you will definitely be on the right track towards correcting his inappropriate behavior. - 29895
