Use A Reflective Dog Collar To Protect Your Pet

By Adam Webster

Despite our best efforts, there are times that our pets get off of a leash or out of their kennel. Many pet owners have had the frightening experience of opening a door at night and that pesky little dog sneaking around your legs to escape. In a matter of seconds your pet can dart into the street into oncoming traffic and be killed. While it may be tempting to blame the driver of the car, we know in out hearts that with no warning there was nothing he or she could have done. If you pet had a reflective dog collar, there is a better chance for the driver to stop in time to save your pet's life.

One out of five people will hit a pet with their vehicle. Of those drivers, one fourth do not stop to check on the animal's condition or to make a report of the accident. This means that millions of dogs and cats die on the road every year and that many more are left there to suffer.

As a responsible dog owner, you should consider a reflective dog collar for your pet. These collars are affordable and make your pet move visible to vehicles from a further distance than a pet without the reflective collar. While darkly colored animals may benefit the most from these collars, every pet becomes more visible with a reflective collar. Pets become much more visible in the one to six hundred foot range giving drivers needed response time to brake and miss your beloved pet.

You will find a couple of types of collars that are both called reflective dog collars. The first is a truly reflective material. It uses prisms embedded in the material and is like the safety vests used by street workers.

A second collar that makes your dog visible after dark, which may be sold as a reflective collar, is truly phosphorescent rather than reflective. This is a glow-in-the-dark technology Rather than a reflective. The collar is charged in the daylight or by lamps and lights. In the dark, the collar glows so that the pet is visible. These collars need a full charge of light to work later, so dogs that are in a house often do not get enough light to keep them working properly.

You will also find reflective leashes that match the reflective collars. These leashes help drivers to see you as well as your pet and thus increase safety for both of you.

Pets that get lost after dark are easier to see using the reflective collar. Remember not to chase that dog, but to work to train it to come to your call. Chasing the dog may force it and you into the danger of the street.

Be sure that you attach an ID tag to the collar. The ID tag should have a current phone number so that you can be contacted if your animal is found. This may save your pet a trip to the pound.

A reflective dog collar is no substitute of using the best in safety practices with your pet. Dogs should not run loose if they are unattended. With a reflective collar, if there is an accident, it is easier to locate your pet with the reflective collar. You might be able to find an injured pet in time to prevent further suffering. - 29895
